We made it!
We left the house around 8:20 AM. Yes, that is extraordinarily early for Korben to be up and he had been up for an hour at that point. I think losing power from 10 PM-4 AM helped him sleep because it got freakin’ hot in here and he didn’t wake up until 6:30 to nurse. I put him back in his crib around 6:45 or so but at 7:15 he rolled over and started babbling. Usually he sleeps in until 9:15 or so after the 4 AM nursing but … I guess once you’re too far past the 4 AM mark, you might as well just get up for the day.
Since everybody was up and it was early (but not cool, already hot!) we headed back out to the South San Gabriel Riverbed. The hike is pretty much a three-part hike. Bumpy rock, wilderness trail, bumpy rock. There is no way I will be taking all three boys there by myself until Lowell can walk by himself and follow verbal instructions to a T (there was poison ivy on the trail and James was very good about avoiding it when I told him “Do not touch that plant. It will make you itchy. Here is some more, don’t let it touch you.”)
Lowell was not impressed with the dinosaur tracks. James didn’t seem impressed but he’ll talk your ear off about how HE found them, nay, discovered them! At the time though, they were both much more interested in the river. Um, stream? trickle?
Shoes were abandoned, feet were cooled off, clothes were soaked. Fun was had by all.
Even I had a few lovely moments (before the heat got to me, just ask Dave) with my shoes off and some lovely had-been flowers nearby.
The hike back was hot. Too hot. Dizzyingly hot. Crazy hot. (yes, those are 3 different links)
All-in-all, this is a place I want the boys to grow up remembering. It’s a place I want to take them on cool sunny days, every year. A place to explore and catch tadpoles, to discover what algae feels like under cool water, to change the waterfalls. We need more places like this in our lives. It was so peaceful and [did I mention hot?] … naturey. I am so glad to be a mom of three boys! Oh the places we’ll go!

It will be Korben who wants to ride Space Mountain again.
