I would judge it as being a success soley on the crowd and Dave’s big smile. I, personally, did not try any sauces. We came home with two new bottles, though, which bring’s Dave’s grand total of hot sauces up to 35. Someday maybe David’ll tell you all about the Austin Hot Sauce Festival from his point of view.

David and I spent the lovely weekend together in San Antonio for the annual Texas Bandmasters Association Conference. We had a great time, although it was a lot of walking. We drove down early early early Saturday morning to get me registered. I had to register as a spouse-membership which cost us a huge $45! woah! Then we went straight into the CCC Middle School Honor Band judging room and caught up with David’s co-workers, Mr. San Luis and Ms. Allison. It was like old times (if you can call a year ago old) with the three of them together. Roma’s (our previous employer) tape was first and CPMS’s tape was second. I thought that Roma 1. played music which sounded utterly too difficult for them & 2. did not have an ensemble concept of blending tone colors. Anyhow… without dwelling on Roma too much, we waited for the results and eventually found out. Cedar Park’s band ranked eleventh; Roma placed thirteenth. I cannot lie. I was thrilled at the results as far as the two schools were concerned. Congratulations to Manuel San Luis and the entire CPMS Symphonic Band! Wa-hoo!!

In the evening, we stopped by Mr. Morrison’s SASI party for some free food (David ate a lot) and later headed over to the IMAX to see Spider Man 2. Personally, I was NOT impressed. I did NOT think it was better than the first; both movies were almost horrible. The CG stuff was pretty fake looking and Kirsten Dunst needed to keep her eyes more than half-open to make a convincing success of her character. I didn’t mind her in Mona Lisa Smile as a supporting actress, but as a lead in Spider Man 2, she could have done better. Kept her eyes a little more open. I was also pretty distracted by a little pimple on her chin. Gawsh, the IMAX screen made it HUGE! And in some scenes it wasn’t there, then in the next it would be… and back and forth. Not that having a blemish is a bad thing; my face is horrible and I would NOT want to be on the IMAX screen!!!

Sunday, I remembered I had a camera in my purse, so I started taking pictures. On our way to the Starbucks in the Rivercenter Mall, I saw a large leaf that looked like a salad. Oh yeah, and, feel free to click on the pictures to see the whole thing. These are just … snippits of the bigger pictures.

We almost made it to the Starbucks, but we stopped at CHAMPIONS to watch Lance win the Tour de France.

Somewhere along the way, we passed the Circus Museum, which had been permanently closed… we really would have liked visiting but … I got a picture of the cool sign outside instead. I think we were on our way to eat lunch at this point.

Last picture of the day… I was talking with Mr. Luckhardt (college marching band director when David and I first met in the Baylor U. Golden Wave Marching Band (BUGWB for short) but now he’s in Minnesota) and Dave was across the way taking this picture.

Last but not least, this is from tonight. I think I’m fairly safe in posting this since I don’t think Nicole will be surfing my site anytime in the next week. This is the card I made to go with the gift I made (I’d take a picture of it, but that would be too much since I haven’t given it to her yet!) for Nicole Moulton’s baby shower which I am helping organize for this coming Saturday. I saw her nursery (which has been totally set up and ready for the baby since week 28 due to a scare with false contractions she had at 26 weeks) and the flower is very much like the Pottery Barn Kids sheer curtain flower. The most impressive part about the card, I think, is that I already had all the stamps. Thanks, mom!

Nicole’s baby girl is due September 6th, but she will probably have it early!

After looking at our food budget and determining that we had enough for a lunch downtown, we first headed to The Shady Grove for some good eating. Someday we are going to take our parents there because I have GOT to go back for some of their tortilla-queso catfish!!! M-mm-boy! Before we headed into the restaurant, we had a little fun with the camera and here are two of those pictures…

David and I only spent an hour in downtown Austin on Memorial Day. Only an hour because the unbelievable heat was wilting our every desire to stay longer and we had to make it back to the car before we were both reduced to a 99° puddle of goo.

All-in-all, it was a fun trip. We were able to see a unicyclist on the Congress Ave. bridge, drive by several Starbucks which were all closed, walk through a music-related shop with all kinds of expensive musical knick-nacks and paintings, walk up to and into the capitol building, take several pictures, and sweat profusely under the hot Texas sun… we had a good time.

Later in the day, we heard on the news that a freak hail storm blew through downtown and cooled things off a bit. 99°s and hail… Austin IS wierd.

Postscript: More pictures of our day trip are available in the gallery.

I have been using a Canon Powershot S200 Digital ELPH, on loan from my brother until the return from our Virginia/Washington D.C. trip, as my camera of choice. It is a very easy-to-take-pictures-with kind of camera. With my Rebel, I know I’m taking pictures, you know I’m taking pictures, the whole world knows I’m taking pictures… but with the little Powershot, I know I’m taking pictures, you may think I’m taking pictures, but the whole world… well, I could be playing with an mp3 player or some sort of PDA so who cares about pictures?! The Olympus D-450 digitial camera we have been using takes wonderful pictures but is not nearly as covert. I’m sure my brother will want his Powershot back eventually, but for the time being, I am having fun.

We have our first photo outing planned and it will be 100% digital. David has agreed to go downtown with me to get pictures of Austin and the Capitol for our little website here. I would like to do something on the first page… with a picture of the Capitol and pictures of downtown are always fun… even if soley taken for an artistic purpose. I look forward to tomorrow.

I am finally twenty-seven! We celebrated by waking up at 6 am and driving out to the Enchanted Rock north of Fredricksburg with our friends, Mario and Alysia. The weather was overcast, but not raining; windy, but not cold.

We started our hike by heading right up the summit trail with a few stops along the way for interesting rocks and climbing attempts. Once at the top, we hung out for a few minutes admiring the view and getting snapshots, then we headed down to the cave. We couldn’t go anywhere in the cave since none of us had thought to bring a flashlight and no other hikers happened to have a flashlight. Next time, we will take a flashlight!

After the summit hike, we headed back down a different way for lunch. We ate sandwiches on a picnic table and saw cardinals, kids playing with little axes, a poodle and a beagle. We decided that we didn’t quite want to leave so after a quick bathroom break, we headed out on a trail around the base of the Enchanted Rock. This trail took us by Turkey Peak, Freshman Hill, Enchanted Rock, and Little Rock. Even though this hike was around the ground, it was still steep and we took 3 breaks in the trip. First, we stopped by a lone rock which Mario and Alysia climbed. The next stop was on the steep side of Enchanted Rock where we watched the rock climbers climbing. Our last stop was in between Enchanted and Little Rocks where there were two very large boulders on a flat surface.

All in all, it was a wonderful trip! We thoroughly enjoyed our time outdoors today and may even return with the Millers for an overnight camping trip sometime this summer! If you ever have a chance to go to the Enchanted Rock, do! and take a flashlight, a backpack (with lunch in it) and good walking/hiking shoes!

For a peek at our day please visit the online photo gallery we have been keeping of our year so far! Enjoy the pictures!
